Infos about the region Västmanland

In the interior parts of Sweden, with borders in the south to Södermanland and Närke, in the west to Värmland, in the north to Dalarna and Gästrikland and to the east to Uppland we find the province of Västmanland. The region is traditionally divided up in Bergslagen and Mälardalen.
There is evidence that Västmanland and the rest of the Mälardalen (Mälarvalley) region was populated from the west as early as after the latest ice melting. There are about 20,000 known archaeological sites to discover in the province.
In Västmanland we find six ancient cities: Västerås (founded in the year 990), Arboga (1200), Köping (1474), Sala (1624) and Lindesberg and Nora (1643), which are all worth a visit. Västerås, also called Mälarstaden (Mälar-town), is the region's largest and the country's fifth largest city with about 110,000 inhabitants.
The terrain rises from the Mälaren lake to the southeast, which has a low, deeply cut coast, where fertile plains spread. It is part of the Swedish lowlands. From the north to the south you will find ridges. In the north the land rises slowly, and the farmland decreases, which is here divided by forests and lakes. The north west is characterized by a large hilly, wooded moraine landscape, however, the plains make deep cuts along the major rivers.
Västmanland's largest lake and the country's third largest lake is called Mälaren. This is also partly located in Södermanland and Uppland and flows into the Baltic Sea. The lake is an attractive destination for fishing enthusiasts from all over Europe. There are in addition to the 33 naturally occurring fish species also planted species. The lake contains fish such as pike, perch, roach, rudd, silver bream, bream, smelt, perch, burbot, tench and bream.
Welcome to the Västmanland, a region with closeness to everything!
